In general, eat lower total saturation foods like carrots when your hunger bar is low, and high-saturation foods when it's full.
One log smelts into one charcoal. One charcoal or normal coal can smelt eight things. Eight charcoal/coal can smelt a whole stack of logs. After a few trees, each yielding about a stack, you'll have a massive chest of charcoal. Save some of this to smelt more, use some to cook potatoes and ore, and sell the rest. 5.
Ratatouille. If you want the most bang for your buck, look for foods that give the nourishment buff. Gives you a couple minutes of essentially infinite saturation, and your food bar wont go down unless you do some really wild stuff. Toast with Jam is my go to.

Golden carrots. Very potent and reasonably plentiful, late-game. If you cure a villager who sells them you'll never run out. Weed. Golden carrots are best if you’re taking damage and regenerating health. Steak and cooked pork chops are best if you’re not taking damage.

It takes spice leaf, firm tofu, mushroom, wheat and salt. Divide hunger by amount of different ingredients and it gets a rating of... 4.5 out of 12. Pretty good, but not the best. EDIT: 3.6 not 4.5. Delighted meal. 18 hunger again, takes a fruit, snow, potato, salt, lettuce, tomato, milk, wheat, firm tofu. Not the best.
