Tambaram City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) is a local government of the City of Tambaram within the Chennai Metropolitan Area of Tamil Nadu, India. [1] It covers an area of 87.64 sq. km in the Chengalpattu district , and has a population of 722,982.
Madurai Municipal Corporation was established in 1971 and Coimbatore Municipal Corporation in 1981. Three more were established in 1994 and the count remained at six till 2007. Since then 19 more urban bodies have been declared as municipal corporations. As of 2024, there are 25 municipal corporations in the state.
Municipal corporations cater to larger urban areas, municipalities serve smaller urban areas, and town panchayats cater to areas that are under transition from rural to urban. [2] As of 2024, there are 25 municipal corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats in Tamil Nadu.

Source of revenue for these local bodies are mainly from centre-state governments. Local bodies also have the power of taxation which include house tax, profession tax, property tax etc. Apart from these they levy fees for specific building plan and layout approvals, water charges, sewerage charges etc.
Formerly a Municipality, Pammal was merged to Tambaram City Municipal Corporation in 2021. [2] Pallavaram–Thuraipakkam 200-feet Radial Road connects Pammal with Thuraipakkam and other areas in OMR (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) and ECR (East Coast Road). The service road along the Chennai Bypass Flyover in Pammal connects many areas with Pammal.
