Navarathri (transl. Nine nights) is a 1964 Indian Tamil-language drama film written, produced and directed by A. P. Nagarajan.The film stars Sivaji Ganesan and Savithri.It was the hundredth film of Ganesan and is well known for his nine distinct roles. [1]

The plot of the movie is based on what happens during Navaratri ("nine nights"). The film opens with the narrator explaining that there are nine types of human behaviors (Navarasam), such as Wonder, Fear, Compassion, Anger, Equanimity, Disgust, Elegance, Bravery and Bliss and that Nageswara Rao's nine roles represents one character per role.

It is a custom to wash and clean the feet of these nine young girls as a mark of respect for the Goddess and offer new clothes as gifts by the devotee. Kanya Puja as a part of Devi worship is to recognise the feminine power vested in the girl child. The girl should be of young age. There is also a ritual purification and chanting of mantras.
