The NPSHa (Net Positive Suction Head Available) is 34 - head loss at sea level. At 200 GPM, the NPSHr is 20 feet, so the NPSHa has to be higher than 20 feet, which means that the head loss has to be below 14 feet (34 - 14 = 20). For a 3" pipe (100 feet total equivalent length) the head loss is about 7.9 feet (Dynamic).

May 27, 2018. #3. Getting air in the strainer basket at lower speeds often happens as pressure is lower then. Fill the strainer basket with water on high speed. Turn off the pump. If the bubble returns, then there is an air leak. If it only happens when running on low speed, it is a common thing for variable speed pumps.

On a separate issue, I read that these pumps can produce dangerous suction. At what speed would that happen and is that a commonly used speed.
Sep 17, 2014. #2. You are missing the fact that the power consumption is less at lower speeds. For a 2 speed pump, on low it moves half the water, but uses 1/4 the power. So even if you double the run time, you saved 50% on power. Also, you really may not need to double the run time and still have a clean pool.
