Mahoning Township is located along the northern border of Armstrong County and is bordered by Clarion County to the north across the river. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 25.2 square miles (65.3 km 2), of which 24.8 square miles (64.2 km 2) is land and 0.42 square miles (1.1 km 2), or 1.73%, is water.
