HEVC codec costs money unless your Device manufacturer provides you. If it worked previously, that seems to indicate that they paid for said license for Windows 10, so it is kind of shady to offer a free OS upgrade that removes a license you presumably already paid for when you bought Windows 10.

Nice tutorial, but for God's Sake! who even wants to use this piece of junk bundled with Windows? There are much, MUCH better alternatives which have HEVC codec bundled by default for free, and have many useful options (which this limited shit doesn't have). VLC and MPC-HC are just significantly better than this junk.

Replied on October 30, 2023. Report abuse. If the picture is in .jpeg or .png format, it does not need the HEVC and HEIF codecs. But the video in .mov format does not confirm that the HEVC codec is needed or not. You can confirm checking the iPhone Camera settings. On the iPhone, open Settigns > Camera > Formats.

I'm not sure if you are trying to be cute or not, but the point is that players like VLC and SMPlayer decode codecs like HEVC/H.265 without the need to install a codec pack. SMPlayer for example supports mplayer and mpv, both can decode HEVC with hardware acceleration.
