For what it's worth, where I come from, a drop saw is an electric mitre saw in which the blade is 'dropped' onto the wood being cut. They usually allow for mitred cuts in the horizontal plane only, as opposed to a sliding compound mitre saw (SCMS), which they otherwise resemble.
