A temporary camp called Camp Spaulding, California was established to house workers on the dam during its construction. Lake Spaulding, the reservoir created by the dam, has a capacity of 74,773 acre-feet (92,231,000 m 3) and supports recreational camping, boating, fishing, and underwater diving.

The Bear River is a tributary of the Feather River in the Sierra Nevada, winding through four California counties: Yuba, Sutter, Placer, and Nevada. About 73 miles (117 km) long, the river flows generally southwest through the Sierra then west through the Central Valley, draining a narrow, rugged watershed of 295 square miles (760 km 2).
The Trinity Unit, centered on Trinity Lake and Lewiston Lake, has four subunits: the Lewiston Lake, Trinity Dam, Stuart Fork, and North Lake Units.They offer many opportunities for recreation, including trout fishing in Lewiston Lake, scenic driving on the Trinity Heritage National Scenic Byway, picnicking, camping, and hiking/riding on the multi-use trail system.
They can be accessed via the Beyers Lakes Trail from Grouse Ridge Trail. Grouse Ridge trail can be accessed from the Eagle Lakes trailhead, off of Interstate 80, or from Grouse Ridge Campground. They sit below the Black Buttes of Grouse Ridge, and are part of the Fordyce Creek watershed draining into Lake Spaulding.
