A base model Outback is likely to be closer in reliability to a Crosstrek. To express disappointment with your car or dealership experience, call Subaru Of America (SOA) 1-800-782-2783. 👨🔧 I am not affiliated with Subaru. 👨🔧. dovidan, gls, DanielAcosta and 5 others.
SubbaruOB said: Why does Consumer Reports rate Forester reliability much better than Outback. Three possibilities: 1) CR reliability ratings are based on data self-reported by owners. Despite the large sample size, those ratings may or may not be statistically representative of the entire fleet. 2) The Forester and the Legacy/Outback are ...
It will be interesting to see what that is, as I had the impression Subaru was committed to the current big screen from the 20 Outback since it's now in the Ascent and other Subaru models. I do hope that whatever this new infotainment is that it will be better from year one than the Outback's infotainment has been with the 6th gen.
1. The oldest of the Gen 4 Outbacks will mostly have less than 60,000 miles on them, given the average annual miles by typical drivers. So, it may be too early to determine long-term reliability 2. Consumer Reports lists the transmissions in the Gen 4 as having much better than average reliability for both major and minor repairs.
Consumer Reports Car Reliability Survey 2016 "Subaru dropped out of the top 10 reliable brands because of multiple problems in the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon, which now have average reliability. The drop was compounded by the WRX/STi falling to below average reliability." Bummer. I just picked up a 2017 a few months ago.

my daughter just got a kia telluride and it feels like a luxury suv. it is really nice and sadly much nicer than the ascent i test drove before getting another outback. imo for handling in lousy weather and just every day bopping in and out of traffic, the outback is hard to beat. every time i test drive something else, i come back to the outback
Seems recalls is the culprit. As for reliability, the ratings are not bad as all, I attached a screen shot from the last 4 years. Definitely a grain of salt thing. While the predicted reliability is low (3/5; no explanation put in), owner satisfaction is 5/5. Road test scored an 82.
Indeed when I go online to their web site (I discontinued my print subscription), the Outback is still their top rated mid-sized SUV and it scores an 85, in the "much better than average" range overall. the reliabilty is only average, owner satisfaction is better than average and the road test score is a 91 (much better than average).
Don't Honda's catch on fire after washing them? Guess there's a good reason for declining reliability [emoji1787] My 2017 Outback has been rock solid for 26k miles. Only routine maintenance so far (knock on wood). Lots of other Subaru's in the family and only issue so far was a brake sensor on my wife's 2015 Forester went bad.
