The first known outboard motor was a small 11 pound (5 kg) electric unit designed around 1870 by Gustave Trouvé, [9] and patented in May 1880 (Patent N° 136,560). [10] Later about 25 petrol powered outboards may have been produced in 1896 by American Motors Co [9] —but neither of these two pioneering efforts appear to have had much impact.
Runabouts can be powered by inboard engines, outboards, jet drives, or inboard-outboard (I/O) drives. Engines can be gasoline or diesel systems. Inboards have the engine block permanently mounted within the hull of the boat, with a drive shaft and a propeller to drive the craft underneath the hull, and a separate rudder to steer the craft.

Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was a maker of Evinrude, Johnson and Gale Outboard Motors, and many different brands of boats. It was a multibillion-dollar Fortune 500 corporation. [ 1 ] Evinrude began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907.
British Seagull was a British manufacturer of simple and rugged two-stroke marine outboard motors, produced from the late 1930s until the mid-1990s. They build a full line of four-stroke outboard marine engines. They were the second U.S. company to build a four-stroke marine outboard engine. They manufactured the first marine engine in 1964. Many of the engine concepts and technologies are taken from their automotive engines used in popular vehicles such as the Accord and Odyssey.
