Groton Public Schools (GPS, Groton School District) is a school district in New London County, Connecticut based in the city of Groton, Connecticut, United States.The Groton Public School District services approximately 4,000 students [1] from the City of Groton, Town of Groton, Groton Long Point, Noank, and West Mystic areas.
By 1805, the town of Groton already had a school committee and twelve district public schools. School committee records from that time put an emphasis on Bible readings, spelling, arithmetic, and grammar as taught from a common set of district preferred texts. [3] Together in 1806, those schools served a population of 52 students. [4]
The earliest incarnation of GDRHS was as the grammar school that was held in Groton town center for which there are funding records as far back as 1758. [16] The residency of the grammar school migrated between the district schools and in 1808 was kept for four months in District school number 1, then two months in number 2, two months in number 3, and two months in number five.
The original Fitch High School (now the former location of Fitch Middle School) was built in 1928 next to the Town Hall on Poquonock Road and was funded in part by the will of a local merchant, Charles Fitch, with the stipulation that it be named after his son - Robert E. Fitch.

Being a summer community, Groton Long Point experiences something of an exodus in early September, as many of the summer families and the renters exit, leaving only a small number of full-time residents in the fall, winter, and spring months. Children remaining attend Groton public schools, including nearby Fitch Senior High School.
