The Thousand Islands archipelago is at the outlet of Lake Ontario at the head of the Saint Lawrence River.The region is bisected by the Canada–United States border and covers portions of Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties in the U.S. state of New York, in addition to parts of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and Frontenac County in the Canadian province of Ontario.
The area was first settled around 1801. The town was formed from parts of the towns of Orleans and Lyme in 1833. The town was named after statesman John M. Clayton.The village of Clayton became the main railroad terminus for the Thousand Islands resort region, during its heyday at the turn of the twentieth century.
Opposite the village in the St. Lawrence is Grindstone Island, one of the large islands of the Thousand Islands. New York State Route 12 intersects New York State Route 12E in the village. NY-12 leads south 22 miles (35 km) to Watertown, the Jefferson county seat, and northeast parallel to the St. Lawrence River 11 miles (18 km) to Alexandria Bay.

[2] It served tourists who came over on steam ships from Clayton, NY through the early 20th century when it closed and was ultimately torn down. Today a community house and post office sit on the former site of the hotel.

Alexandria Bay is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States, within the town of Alexandria. It is located in the Thousand Islands region of northern New York. The population of the village was 1,078 at the 2010 United States Census. [2] It lies near the Thousand Islands Border Crossing of Canada and the United States.
