Jules is a transgender girl who enters into a turbulent relationship with Rue after moving into town. She has a strained relationship with her mother, who placed her in a psychiatric hospital against her will when she was 11. Free-spirited and kind, as well as emotional and impulsive, she often finds herself bearing the weight of Rue's addiction.
The series follows Rue Bennett (Zendaya), a troubled teenage drug addict who struggles to get sober, find her place in the world, and adjust to her relationships after rehab. Though Rue is the central focus of the show, the beginning of most episodes provides backstories for the rest of the main characters.
