The Perkins 4.236 is a diesel engine manufactured by Perkins Engines. First produced in 1964,over 70,000 were produced in the first three years, and production increased to 60,000 units per annum. Perkins now had manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, China, India, and a joint venture with Ishikawajima-Shibaura-Machinery company in Japan.
In late 1966, Volvo began using a 3,869 cc OHV diesel inline-four engine from Perkins (Perkins 4.236) in the F82 and F83 models, renamed versions of the "Snabbe" and "Trygge." This engine, labeled D39 by Volvo, produced 80 PS (59 kW).

This conversion was successful and prompted Gardner to introduce the "LW" series of diesel engines, designed especially for road vehicles but later modified and supplied as a marine engine with factory-fitted bilge pumps.
