The Miracles (known as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles from 1965 to 1972) were an American vocal group formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1955.They were the first successful recording act for Motown Records and are considered one of the most important and most influential groups in the history of pop, soul, rhythm and blues and rock and roll music.
The Miracles were the Motown Record Corporation's first group and its first million-selling recording artists. During their nineteen-year run on the American music charts, the Miracles charted over fifty hits and recorded in the genres of doo-wop, soul, disco, and R&B. Twenty-six Miracles songs reached the top 10 of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including four R&B number ones.
Robinson is a board member of the national Rhythm & Blues Foundation and the HAL Awards. Her cousin and original Miracles member Bobby Rogers toured with the last incarnation of The Miracles throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, until his death in 2013. Claudette still performs and makes selected appearances with The Miracles.
Griffin was born and raised in West Baltimore, Maryland.He attended Garrison Junior High School and Forest Park High School.He, like his brother Donald Griffin (1955–2015), [2] [3] (who later replaced Marv Tarplin in the Miracles), was a guitarist, as well as a singer, and sang with a local Baltimore group called The Last Dynasty.
