Torrance High School first opened on September 11, 1917, [3] under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles High School District, [4] as a combination high school and elementary school to accommodate the area's rapid post-World War I growth brought on by the region's petroleum industry and iron works, as well as the Pacific Electric Railway expansion.
In 1959 Paul Hornyak, senior point guard, was the first High School All-American in basketball for the state of Nevada. The school's football program has won the Tri-State Championship in 1955. And the second in 1960 in Class 2A. A 3A championship was won by the girls' volleyball squad in 1975.

The school also captured the City Championship in golf in 2009, 2011 and 2012. The boys' volleyball team won back-to-back City Championships in 1991 and 1992. The boys' coss country team has won three City Championships (1948, 2018, 2019). The boys soccer team won a City Championship in 1975 and the girls team won three straight from 2019-2021.
