Legoland California Resort is a theme park, miniature park, and aquarium [4] in Carlsbad, California, based on the Lego toy brand. Opening on March 20, 1999, it was the first Legoland park to open outside of Europe. [1] The park is currently owned by Merlin Entertainments, which took a controlling interest in 2005. [5]

A typical Legoland Discovery Centre occupies approximately 30,000–35,000 square feet (2,790–3,250 m 2) of floor area. [1] [2] Discovery Centres include models of local landmarks rendered in Lego bricks. Visitors can also learn how the Lego bricks are manufactured or partake in building classes taught by a Master Model Builder.

On January 19, 2012, Legoland California confirmed that they would build a new attraction for the 2012 season called Pirate Reef, a Hopkins shoot-the-chutes attraction. [3] It is themed to pirates and features 28 new Lego models for the park. The 28 new models are made out of 250,000 Lego bricks. [1]

The first installation opened at Legoland California in 2001 as Technic Coaster. [1] This was followed by Legoland Deutschland's Project X – Test Strecke and Legoland Billund's X-treme Racers in 2002. [2] [3] On March 20, 2004, Jungle Coaster opened at Legoland Windsor in the Adventure Land section of the park. [4]
