Established as a critical access hospital under Article 2 of the NC General Statue § 131-4, Dosher Memorial Hospital is overseen by a publicly elected Board of Trustees. It is the only independent critical access hospital in North Carolina. Dosher is licensed for 25 acute care beds, and focuses on outpatient surgeries and procedures.
The hospital was founded on May 1, 1970 and at the time had 99 beds. It has been affiliated with Sutter Health since 1996. [2] In 2021, Memorial Medical Center received the prestigious Lantern Award from Emergency Nursing Association. Memorial was one of thirty-three facilities to receive the award nationally. [3]
Sutter Hospital Association was founded in 1921 as a response to the 1918 flu pandemic. Named for nearby Sutter's Fort , its first hospital opened in 1923. Later known as Sutter Community Hospitals, the organization eventually merged with several struggling hospitals in the surrounding area.
