Topics in Early Childhood Special Education is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes papers in the field of Education. The journal's editor is Erin E. Barton ( Vanderbilt University ). Unlike other areas of education, early childhood care and education (ECCE) places a strong emphasis on the development of the whole child – attending to his or her social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs – in order to establish a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.
Early childhood intervention came about as a natural progression from special education for children with disabilities (Guralnick, 1997).
