Mayiladuthurai, historically [26] [27] [28] known as Mayuram or Mayurapuram, [29] has a rich cultural and religious heritage dating back over a thousand years and was part of the ancient Chola Kingdom. The town is mentioned in ancient Tamil literature and inscriptions, highlighting its importance as a center of learning and spirituality.

The town is known for agriculture and weaving. As Mayiladuthurai District is situated in East Coast, fishing plays a vital role on generating its revenue.

In modern times, the village is part of Mayiladuthurai district and is administered by a village panchayat. As per the 2021 census, the village had a population of 6,244. The village is connected by bus transport and is located on the Chidambaram - Nagapattinam highway. There is a small seaport under the control of the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board.
