Van Zandt County is commonly known as the Free State of Van Zandt. The title was particularly prevalent through the Reconstruction Era, but is still in use today.Many versions of the county's history may account for this moniker, and historians, even within the county and throughout its existence, do not agree how exactly it became known as the Free State.
(NOTE added February 2015) — According to the 1920 federal census of Van Zandt County, Texas, J.Z. (James) and Tookie Jones were parents of the following children: Garrison – age 16; Slennie – age 13; Clyde – age 10; Herbert – age 7; and W.D. – age 3. [88] Another son, Roy Lee, was born in 1920, after the census information was taken.
The sixth and current Van Zandt County Courthouse was built from 1936 to 1937 using special county funds and a grant from the federal Public Works Administration. The building was designed by Voelcker & Dixon in an Art Deco style. [2] [9] The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. [2]
