Founded in 1981 by Bill Kimpton and led by Chief Executive Officer Mike DeFrino, the group was the largest chain of boutique hotels in the United States in 2011. As of January 2024, it operates 81 hotels worldwide with a number of new properties forthcoming. [2]
On August 22, 2006, the hotel became the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Washington DC. [8] The hotel was sold to the Massachusetts-based Service Properties Trust in 2019 for $141.5 million. That company owns a 1/3 stake in Sonesta Hotels, [9] and renamed the property the Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle on December 1, 2020. [10]
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants took over management in 2012 and the hotel was renamed the Kimpton Donovan Hotel. [5] Viceroy Hotels & Resorts took over management in July 2019 [ 6 ] and the hotel was renamed The Donovan while it underwent renovation, before being rebranded as Hotel Zena on October 8, 2020. [ 7 ]
The building contains two hotels, the Element Philadelphia, a brand by Westin Hotels, and the W Philadelphia, a brand of W Hotels, both of which are subsidiaries of Marriot International. At 617 ft (188 m), it is the 9th-tallest building in Philadelphia, and 12th-tallest building in Pennsylvania, as well as the tallest hotel in Philadelphia. [1]
The Divine Lorraine Hotel, also known as the Lorraine Apartments, stands at the corner of Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Designed by architect Willis G. Hale and built between 1892 and 1894, the building originally functioned as apartments, housing some of Philadelphia's wealthy residents.
The hotel option was proving far more appealing than in the early 1980s because of the agency's overwhelmingly positive experience in allowing Kimpton Hotels to transform the 170,000-square-foot (16,000 m 2) vacant Tariff Commission Building into a 172-room luxury Hotel Monaco. [68]
