Commonwealth Offices is a heritage-listed commercial building at 42 Sturt Street, Townsville CBD, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1884 to 1889. It has also known as D & W Murray Ltd Building, Rooneys Ltd Building and Scott, Dawson & Stewart Building. As at March 2016, it is known as Federation Place.
Once commissioned the project was spearheaded by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders Advisory Committee of Townsville City Council from October 1999 to July 2001, planning was then taken over by a Queensland Heritage Trails Network Cultural Centre Steering Committee. The Centre cost a total of about $6 million.
The City of Townsville was first established as the Borough of Townsville under the Municipal Institutions Act 1864 on 15 February 1866. The surrounding rural area, which was given the name Thuringowa Division , was established on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the Divisional Boards Act 1879 .
Following local government reform undertaken by the Government of Queensland prior to the March 2008 elections, the previous entities of NQ Water, The City of Townsville and the City of Thuringowa were amalgamated. In the 2024 Townsville City Council election, Troy Thompson (Independent), was sworn in as Mayor of Townsville. [74]
