In 1976, the Labor Party won control of the council, with Perc Tucker elected mayor. He served until his death in August 1980, being replaced by Mike Reynolds, who was himself succeeded by Tony Mooney in 1989. Mooney served as mayor until the 2008 election, which was the first the original City of Townsville merged with the City of Thuringowa.
