Hokuto is actually Natsume's shikigami, whom Natsume used as a medium to be close to Harutora. Hokuto's 'death' was one of the things that prompted Harutora to become Natsume's shikigami, but Harutora wanted to be her shikigami since they were kids when they made a promise. She shares her name with another Shikigami called Hokuto, a dragon.
