Mescalero (Mescalero-Chiricahua: Mashgal) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Otero County, New Mexico, United States, located on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. The population was 1,338 at the 2010 census .
Mescalero is part of the southwestern branch of this subfamily; it is very closely related to Chiricahua, and more distantly related to Western Apache. These are considered the three dialects of Apachean. Although Navajo is a related Southern Athabaskan language, its language and culture are considered distinct from those of the Apache.
The Mescalero Ridge forms the western edge of the great Llano Estacado, a vast plateau or tableland in the southwestern United States in New Mexico and Texas. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is the western equivalent of the Caprock Escarpment , which defines the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado .
It forms to the southwest of, and feeds into, Mescalero Lake, [2] just inside the north central border of the Mescalero Reservation. [3] The creek then continues east of the lake. [4] It turns north and then east again, shadowed by Carrizo Canyon Road, [5] before feeding into the Rio Ruidoso south-southeast of Ruidoso, New Mexico. [6]
