Stryker60 - Thank you very much. There are no official ranges anywhere near me except the short one in Lake City, and it's not even on that list at all. But I'll find a few Sharps guys somewhere near me, and we'll find a 1000 yard shooting place, and have just as much fun!

I would reckon one would have to choose between first and second focal plane. My old wood stocked rifle carried an old Weaver T16, all that I had. I kinda regret that I never tried longer range shooting, but the ranges near me are 300 or less that I know about. Always liked the 27 1/4" barrels, the stock design, and light trigger of the old 40x.

I wish there were civilian rifle ranges with multiple pop-up targets as the military has. Shooting at paper is boring and does not instantly confirm a hit or miss. The rifle range near me has a 25-yard lane. If it has a shooting bench and a chair, it should be good to attain battlesight zero for 300 yards (meters), perhaps.

It would be wonderful if a .22 RF benchrest book could be compiled such as the Precision Shooting "Benchrest Shooting Primer". This book is primarily aimed at the centerfire benchrest disciplines, but there is a great deal of info useful to the .22 RF shooter.

Many shooting ranges, including my own, don't like it because it's capable of punching through half an inch of mild steel plate and spalling the rear of the plate like you wouldn't believe. I've seen holes 3/4s of an inch across, or better than twice the bullet diameter, blown in 1/2 inch thick mild steel plates.

I have been shooting into round bales all my shooting life (about 24 years of trigger time) and never seen any signs of a round passing through the back side even with the big boys like 7.62x54r, 30-06 or 7mm RemMag.

The bead was low for me. (shrugs) In any case shooting accurately at 50 yards should definitely be fairly easy and out to 100 should not be much of a problem with good sights. A shotgun (even with a smooth bore) shooting slugs has a lot longer effective range that what most people give it credit for.

  11. What's Your Shooting Bench Height? | Gun and Game Forum

    www.gunandgame.com/threads/whats-your-shooting-bench-height.152542

Farmer, If your question was directed to me, our range has benches and they seem to all vary by several inches. Some 30" some maybe 36". I seem to manage no matter what bench since I am more interested in getting the rifle level using the rear sandbag I bring. I more or less adjust the front by adding or subtracting till I get a level rifle.
