The Dargan Company was hired to build the 2 million dollar project during the summer of 1976. The ribbon-cutting ceremony of Kimbel Library was held on November 15, 1977. Two-thirds of the library's second floor was devoted to 8 classrooms and 25 faculty offices that would later be available for library expansion.

The library was founded in 1895 by the Conway Women's Club, and the present building was constructed in 1900. It was designed by Thomas Silloway, better known for his many churches and the Vermont State House, and may be his only library design. The clock in the tower was provided by George M. Stevens. [2]
