State Route 2 (SR 2), formerly known as Inter-county Highway 2 until 1921 [3] and State Highway 2 in 1922, [4] is an east–west highway crossing most of northern Ohio. Its western terminus is at the Indiana state line near Hicksville where the route becomes Indiana State Road 37 which continues to Fort Wayne, Indiana .

SR 132 was commissioned in 1923 on the same route as it currently follows, between New Richmond and Owensville. [2] [3] The highway between New Richmond and Batavia was paved in 1927. [4] [5] In 1937 the route was extended north to Clarksville. [6] [7] The section of road between SR 131 and Clarksville was paved in 1942.
For its first 19 miles (31 km) or so, the highway runs concurrently with Interstate 74 (I-74) and I-75 before it winds through downtown Cincinnati for several miles. The route is primarily two lanes between New Richmond and West Portsmouth, Ohio, where it becomes a four-lane partial access highway until it exits the state near Chesapeake.
In 1935 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law which added 5,000 miles of roads to the state highway system over a 12-month period. [7] [8] These roads were assigned route numbers in the 500s, 600s, and 700s. [9] In 1962 certain numbers were retired to accommodate numbers in the Interstate Highway System. [citation needed]
