Who Put the Bomp was a rock music fanzine edited and published by Greg Shaw from 1970 to 1979. [1] [2] Its name came from the 1961 hit doo-wop song by Barry Mann, "Who Put the Bomp". Later, the name was shortened to Bomp! Bomp!, and extended by Shaw to the record label Bomp! Records, which he headed until his death in 2004. [3] [4]
The same year, Mann himself reached the Top 40 as a performer with a novelty song co-written with Gerry Goffin, "Who Put the Bomp", [5] which parodied the nonsense words of the then-popular doo-wop genre. [3] [6]

Shaw was born in San Francisco, California. [1] He began writing about rock and roll music as a young teenager. His first zines were Tolkien-related, [1] but among them was also a mimeographed sheet called Mojo Navigator (full title, "Mojo-Navigator Rock and Roll News") which he founded in 1966 with David Harris. [2]
