When Belgium annexed the Belgian Congo as a colony in November 1908, it was initially organised into 22 districts. Ten western districts were administered directly by the main colonial government, while the eastern part of the colony was administered under two vice-governments: eight northeastern districts formed Orientale Province, and four southeastern districts formed Katanga.
The 25 provinces of DR Congo are divided into 145 territories (fr. territoires, sing. territoire) and 33 cities (fr. villes, sing. ville). [1] Each provincial division is also a constituency of the National Assembly as well as of the Provincial Assembly of its province. [2]
Together with the four unsplit provinces—Bas-Congo (renamed Kongo Central), Maniema, Nord-Kivu, and Sud-Kivu—they make up the twenty-five provinces listed in Article 2 of the Constitution. Between 1971 and 1997 (during the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko when Congo was known as Zaire ), its official name was Shaba Province .
