Viking ships held significant roles in religious rituals, especially in Viking ship burial ceremonies. Vikings believed that death was not the end but a journey to another world. A very long, narrow and low-boarded ship could have been built, based on ship finds from the end of the Viking Age. But such a ship could not sail to America, which was an overarching goal in the Draken project. Therefore, the ship was made wide and high-boarded in addition, and thus ended up far outside the Viking Age.

The Viking Ship Museum (Danish: Vikingeskibsmuseet) in Roskilde is Denmark's national ship museum for ships of the prehistoric and medieval period. The main focus of the museum is a permanent exhibition of the Skuldelev ships , five original Viking ships excavated nearby in 1962.
