Production in 1948–49 was 24,131.1 tonnes (53.2 million pounds), a record high. The average returns from productive hives in 1958–59 was 47 kilograms (103 lb) of honey per hive and the average quantity of wax was 590 grams (1.3 lb) per productive hive. [26] Australia had 451,000 hives in 1958–59 of which 315,000 were regarded as productive.
Each colony that is to use flow frame extraction must be furnished with flow frames, and their cost limits their appeal to existing commercial apiarists. However, new entrants to small beekeeping may find that the greater cost per hive of flow frames is more than off-set by saving time, labour, space, mess, and disturbance to the bees.
Another hive design was invented by Rev. John Thorley in 1744; the hive was placed in a bell jar that was screwed onto a wicker basket. The bees were free to move from the basket to the jar, and honey was produced and stored in the jar. The hive was designed to keep the bees from swarming as much as they would have in other hive designs. [33]
In beekeeping, a Langstroth hive is any vertically modular beehive that has the key features of vertically hung frames, a bottom board with entrance for the bees, boxes containing frames for brood and honey (the lowest box for the queen to lay eggs, and boxes above where honey may be stored) and an inner cover and top cap to provide weather protection. As hive bees are not kept at such high altitudes, Apis laboriosa is the only bee to produce this honey. The wholesale price of the red honey is about five times the price of regular honey from Apis mellifera or Apis cerana and large amounts of it are exported from Nepal to Japan , Korea , and Hong Kong .
Wax foundation was invented by German Johannes Mehring in 1857, [1] a few years after Langstroth designed and patented the Langstroth hive on October 5, 1852. [2] Mehring's wax foundation had only the bottom of the cells, and today's base with the foundation of the cells was invented by US beekeeper Samuel Wagner. [ 1 ]
