ISO 26262, titled "Road vehicles – Functional safety", is an international standard for functional safety of electrical and/or electronic systems that are installed in serial production road vehicles (excluding mopeds), defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011, and revised in 2018.
Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) is a risk classification scheme defined by the ISO 26262 - Functional Safety for Road Vehicles standard. This is an adaptation of the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) used in IEC 61508 for the automotive industry.
The assignment is typically done in the context of an overarching system, where the worst case consequences of software failures are investigated. For example, automotive standard ISO 26262 requires the performance of a Hazard and Risk Assessment ("HARA") on vehicle level to derive the ASIL of the software executed on a component.
These failure rate numbers can be converted into the alternative failure modes from the automotive functional safety standard, ISO 26262. The FMEDA name was given by Dr. William M. Goble in 1994 to the technique that had been in development since 1988 by Dr. Goble and other engineers now at exida. [4]
The automotive industry has developed ISO 26262 "Road Vehicles Functional Safety Standard" based on IEC 61508. The certification of those systems ensures the compliance with the relevant regulations and helps to protect the public.
It is also highly recommended for SIL 4 in part 3 Annex B of the basic safety publication [2] and ASIL D in part 6 of automotive standard ISO 26262. [3] Additionally, NASA requires 100% MC/DC coverage for any safety critical software component in Section 3.7.4 of NPR 7150.2D. [4]
