The Inverness area was first settled in 1836 by George Ela and became known as Deer Grove. After surveying the township area, in 1840 the US government offered land in the area for $1.25 per acre. By 1854, rail service was established to Deer Grove, and in 1859 the line was incorporated into the Chicago and North Western Railway system.

It is the fourth-smallest county in Illinois by area. When Edwards County was formed in 1814, it comprised nearly half of the State of Illinois. New counties were formed from it until, in 1824, it assumed its present form from the creation of Wabash County. The two are the fourth and fifth smallest counties in Illinois.
When rule of the area reverted to the French crown in the 1730s, officials began to discuss construction of a stone fortress. The old maps do not provide a location for the Goshen Road in Gallatin and Saline Counties. The road from Old Shawneetown to the salt works at Equality is shown, skirting the Shawnee Hills to the south of modern Illinois Route 13. Although the road probably ran from Equality toward Eldorado, there is no trace on the old maps.
The Dundee Brick Company was an important early employer, starting in 1852. West Dundee was incorporated in 1867 and East Dundee followed four years later. The Illinois Iron and Bolt Company opened in Carpentersville in 1870. Dairy production became an important source of income for East and West Dundee in the 1870s.
