Glen Arbor Township: This inn, originally called the "Sleeping Bear House," was built in 1857 by C.C. McCarthy. It operated as a boarding house and hotel through the rest of the 19th century, and well into the 20th. It eventually closed in 1973, and was purchased, along with the remainder of Glen Haven, by the National Park Service. 23
Glen Arbor Township is located along the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which in 2011 was named the "Most Beautiful Place in America" by Good Morning America. [4] The town is bordered by Glen Lake to its East and Lake Michigan to its West. Glen Lake is a popular destination for tourists due to its warm turquoise blue waters.
In 1857, Glen Haven, was founded as a settlement called Sleeping Bearville when C. C. McCarty, brother-in-law of Glen Arbor pioneer John E. Fisher, built a saw mill and inn on the beach there. [2] [3] By 1881, there were 11 buildings in the community. Over years the timberline receded away from the shore and steamer firewood became scarce.
The roadway, with its "scenic vistas and gentle curves", [3] is located off state highway M-109 between Empire and Glen Arbor. It runs for 7.4 miles (11.9 km) through forest and dunes areas, providing access to scenic overlooks of the Lake Michigan shoreline and the surrounding park land.
South Manitou Island (/ m æ ˈ n É™ t u / MAN-É™-too) is located in Lake Michigan, approximately 16 miles (26 km) west of Leland, Michigan.
