In 1965, an Episode of the TV Show "Hazel" (S4, E16) had 2 similar-looking Thunderbirds, a 1964 and a 1965, which caused some confusion during the show. In reality, the 1964 and 1965 Thunderbirds were distinctive enough to not allow confusion, but the 1965 was the first Year of the 2-sided Key, which was completely different from the 1964.

The fifth generation Ford Thunderbird is a large personal luxury car series, produced by Ford for the 1967–1971 model years. This fifth generation saw the second major change of direction for the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird had fundamentally remained the same in concept through 1966, although the design had been revised twice.
Market research suggested sales of the Thunderbird were limited by its two-seat configuration, making it unsuitable for families. The Studebaker Speedster and the Chrysler 300C shared many appearances with the Thunderbird, while offering a rear seat. As a response, Ford executives decided to add a rear seat to the Thunderbird.
