In season three, Elena does everything in her power to make Stefan get his humanity back, which was turned off by Klaus as payment for saving Damon from a werewolf bite in the latter part of season two. Meanwhile, she grows closer to Damon while working together on saving Stefan and trying to defeat Klaus, eventually even sharing a kiss.
Alaric proposes to her, telling her that he had already been planning to propose before the news, and she accepts. After Liz's funeral, Caroline returns home, but Elena follows her and confronts her after realizing that Caroline plans to turn off her humanity to stop her pain and prevent what Damon warned her about.
Stefan and Elena try to bring Caroline back but it fails and Caroline vows revenge for them not giving her the year she wanted without any feelings. Enzo thinks back to when Maggie wanted to become a vampire to help him escape, but he tells her to leave and forget about him. Damon goes to rescue Stefan, Elena, and Bonnie by admitting he killed Maggie after she tried to kill him. Enzo then turns his humanity off, attacks Liv, then takes Elena. Elena escapes from Enzo and then Stefan kills him.
