Valentine was founded in 1882. The Valentine post office was established on December 4, 1882. The Sioux City and Pacific Railroad was extended to that point and train service began on April 1, 1883. Cherry, an Army officer who was stationed at Fort Niobrara and was killed in South Dakota in 1881. [3] Cherry County is in the Nebraska Sandhills.
