The city stands on the banks of the Ob River in the West Siberian Plain. The southern boundary of the city runs through the Novosibirsk reservoir, which is formed by the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Station and cuts through the Ob Plateau. The nearest major cities are Omsk, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Tomsk.
To the north, South Central Siberia merges into the Siberian forests. To the south, South Central Siberia merges into the mountains along the former Sino-Soviet border. Dzungaria is directly to the south. To the west of South Central Siberia is the agricultural steppe of the Altai Krai with its Russian population.
