Oclacitinib, sold under the brand name Apoquel among others, is a veterinary medication used in the control of atopic dermatitis and pruritus from allergic dermatitis in dogs at least 12 months of age. [1] [4] Chemically, it is a synthetic cyclohexylamino pyrrolopyrimidine janus kinase inhibitor that is relatively selective for JAK1. [5]
A hot spot, or acute moist dermatitis, is an acutely inflamed and infected area of skin irritation created and made worse by a dog licking and biting at itself. A hot spot can manifest and spread rapidly in a matter of hours, as secondary Staphylococcus infection causes the top layers of the skin to break down and pus becomes trapped in the hair.
Other antibiotics being recommended by vets are enrofloxacin and clindamycin, which are used to treat bacterial infections and wounds, respectively, according to Veterinary Centers of America (VCA).
Perioral dermatitis has a tendency to occur on the drier parts of the face and can be aggravated by drying agents including topical benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin and lotions with an alcohol base. [8] Reports of perioral dermatitis in renal transplant recipients treated with oral corticosteroids and azathioprine have been documented. [5]
It is most commonly used as a topical antibiotic ointment. [2] It is effective against gram-positive bacteria , gram-negative bacteria , and can be used in the treatment of trypanosomiasis . [ 1 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Its use in medicine has become less frequent, as safer and more effective products have become available. [ 5 ]
