The following is a list of people executed by the U.S. state of Ohio since capital punishment was resumed in the United States in 1976. [1] All of the following people have been executed for murder since the Gregg v. Georgia decision. All 56 were executed by lethal injection. [2]
Ronald Ray Phillips (October 10, 1973 – July 26, 2017) [1] was an Ohio death row inmate who was sentenced to death and executed for the 1993 rape and murder of Sheila Evans (September 10, 1989 – January 18, 1993), the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend, Fae Amanda Evans (March 29, 1967 – July 8, 2008), after an extended period of physical and sexual abuse against the child. Romell Broom (June 4, 1956 – December 28, 2020) was an American death row inmate who was convicted of murder, kidnapping and rape. He was sentenced to death for the 1984 murder of 14-year-old Tryna Middleton. Broom was scheduled to be executed on September 15, 2009, but after executioners failed to locate a vein he was granted a reprieve.
Donald Harvey was born in Hamilton, Ohio on April 15, 1952, [2] the oldest of three children born to Ray and Goldie Harvey. [3] He was raised in the tiny Appalachian town of Booneville, Kentucky, [2] [4] where his parents were struggling tobacco farmers and members of the local Baptist church. [5]
Dillon was born in Canton, Ohio and was a resident of nearby Magnolia. He had a wife and son and was employed for twelve years as a draftsman at the Canton Ohio Waterworks. He graduated in 1972 from Ohio State University in journalism. [5] Between the period of April 1, 1989 to April 5, 1992, Dillon shot and killed five people in Ohio.
