The Saint Hilarion Castle lies on the Kyrenia mountain range, in Cyprus. This location provided the castle with command of the pass road from Kyrenia to Nicosia . It is the best preserved ruin of the three former strongholds in the Kyrenia mountains, the other two being Kantara and Buffavento .
On August 14, 1974 the Turkish Army captured Kantara. Soon all the Icons were taken by smugglers and all furniture and fittings disappeared. It was fortunate that Church Commissioner P. Ctorides had previously taken photos of each one of the church icons for people to remember, and perhaps one day some might be recovered. [1]
