Nightjars can occupy all elevations from sea level to 4,200 m (13,800 ft), and a number of species are montane specialists. Nightjars occupy a wide range of habitats, from deserts to rainforests but are most common in open country with some vegetation. [8] The nighthawks are confined to the New World, and the eared nightjars to Asia and ...
The common nighthawk or bullbat (Chordeiles minor) is a medium-sized [3] [4] crepuscular or nocturnal bird [3] [5] of the Americas within the nightjar (Caprimulgidae) family, whose presence and identity are best revealed by its vocalization.
When roosting on the ground during the day, this medium-sized (20–23 centimetres (7.9–9.1 in) long) nightjar is mainly variegated grey, with a browner collar. It has a shadowy form with easy, silent moth-like flight; this nightjar is relatively short-tailed, and lacks white in the wings or tail. The song is a churring trill.

The least nighthawk (Chordeiles pusillus), at 6.3 inches (15–19 cm) and 23 grams (0.81 oz), is the smallest of all Caprimulgiformes, while the Nacunda nighthawk (Chordeiles nacunda) is one of the largest nightjars in the world measuring at 11-13 inches (28–33 cm).
Six specimens of nacunda nighthawk were found to average 159 g (5.6 oz) in body mass, with range of 130 to 188 g (4.6 to 6.6 oz). [5] Its very large size, large head, and pale body with highly contrasting black primaries make the nacunda nighthawk easy to identify. [6] This species is noteworthy for its partially diurnal habits.
The short-tailed nighthawk is 19 to 21 cm (7.5 to 8.3 in) long. One L. s. semitorquatusfemale weighed 79 g (2.8 oz) and several L. s. nattereri males weighed 82 to 89 g (2.9 to 3.1 oz). This is a rather large nightjar with an unusually short tail. Its upperparts are dark brown to blackish with rufous and buff spots and speckles.
