In my opinion, "Gone Away" feels like a response, or addendum to "Mad World". I have tried, unsuccessfully and not exhaustively, to confirm the writing credits for "Gone Away" to see if Tears for Fears or any of its members are credited. Some of this might explain the reservations Mr. Holland has had in discussing this song in any real detail.
