The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. -Theodore Roosevelt.

The display cases in all three were completely devoid of everything except a small selection of shotgun ammo. I found a clerk behind the counter at the last store and asked ...

If you mean the deep red box at WalMart, the price went up a few $ just before Christmas, as did all the Federal and Remington 50/100 packs. I wasn't happy to see a $4 increase / 100 rounds of 9mm. But yes, the Perfecta 9mm was still on rollback Wednesday at just under $10 / 50. The issue is getting there while they have some to sell.

But ammo prices continue to creep down - starting to see off brand 9mm for just under $200 a case. Recently got a case of Fiocchi 9AP, shipped for $240. Once 9mm cases get down to 189 and I will buy in mass again. My best advice is to incrementally buy more than you need as you can afford until a good price comes again, then buy big.
Up until six months ago the Perfecta brass case 115 gr ammo was readily available at our local Walmart for about $10.50 per box of 50. This was slightly more than the Federal Aluminum case - $10.00. Then the price was reduced to just under $10. For about a month they had piles of the Perfecta at the "rollback" price.

Unfortunately it went quick and I didn't get any, but now we know for next time. I see a lot of Aguila and Blazer up there as well (gunbot) but I don't know anything about those brands either.
I bought Federal 9mm ammo yesterday at Walmart for 9.97 + tax for 50 rounds. Not sure how long the sale last or what areas.
When I first got interested in 9mm pistols I wondered about the same thing, but since I got my practice ammo at Walmart because of the price I shot 115 Federal aluminum. Now that Walmart is no longer selling pistol ammo I did some tests with the three weights, 115, 124 and 147. I used a SIG Legion SAO 9mm and a P225A1.
