The Riviera Maya (Spanish pronunciation: [ri'βjeɾa 'maʝa]) is a tourism and resort district south of Cancun, Mexico. It straddles the coastal Federal Highway 307 , along the Caribbean coastline of the state of Quintana Roo , located in the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula .
The island of Isla Mujeres is located off the coast and is accessible by ferry from Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas in the Hotel Zone. [44] In 2020, the Quintana Roo government implemented a law that all international visitors arriving to the State of Quintana Roo are required to pay a fee called the VisiTAX. [ 45 ]
Holbox (Spanish pronunciation:, "black hole" in Yucatec Maya) is an island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula.It is approximately 41.84 kilometres (26.00 miles) long and 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) wide, and it is separated from the mainland by 10 km of shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife.
The Riviera Maya is located along the Caribbean coastline, including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Akumal and Cozumel. There are a number of Mayan archeological sites in Quintana Roo, including Chacchoben , Coba , Kohunlich , Muyil , San Gervasio , Tulum , Xcaret , Xelha , and Yo'okop .
In the north, there is a 50 km stretch of mangroves from Cancun to the town of Playa del Carmen, opposite the island of Cozumel. Further south are the coastal lagoons of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve , around which are 23 archeological sites of the Maya civilization .

In the 1960s the "island of Cancún" was only occupied at certain times of the year, [3] however by 1974 the first hotel was opened in what is now known as the Hotel Zone. This was also the year Quintana Roo that was recognized as a state.
