The first modern book exclusively about the grammar of Marathi was printed in 1805 by Willam Carey. [1] [2] The principal word order in Marathi is SOV (subject–object–verb). [3]

Moreshwar Ramachandra Walimbe (Devanagari: मोरेश्वर रामचंद्र वाळंबे or मो.रा. वाळंबे; 30 June 1912 – 21 March 1992) was an educator and a grammarian of the Marathi language. He wrote style guides and textbooks on the grammar of Marathi.
Marathi used to have a /t͡sʰ/ but it merged with /s/. [4]Some speakers pronounce /d͡z, d͡zʱ/ as fricatives but the aspiration is maintained in /zʱ/. [4]A defining feature of the Marathi language is the split of Indo-Aryan ल /la/ into a retroflex lateral flap ळ (ḷa) and alveolar ल (la).
Setu Madhavrao was well versed in Marathi, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and Persian, apart from Kannada, which was his mother tongue. As a linguist he discovered the sound system and Grammars of tribal languages like Kolami and Gondi. He was one who served the cause of Marathi against all odds in pre and post - Independent Hyderabad state. [3]

When printing in Marathi became possible, choosing between Modi and Balbodh was a problem. William Carey published the first book on Marathi grammar in 1805 using Balbodh since printing in the Modi script was not available to him in Serampore, Bengal. At the time Marathi books were generally written in Balbodh.
