The 1861 mermaid painting.. An oil on canvas painting by Jerichau Baumann exhibited at the Salon in Paris in the spring of 1861 is believed to be her first painting of a mermaid. A French art critic described it as "a fateful creature, which, due to its attractiveness, would cause the 'Scandinavian Odysseus' to run aground". [ 4 ]
The most controversial aspect of Waterhouse's painting was his depiction of the Sirens, as it differed greatly from contemporary Victorian era conceptions. While many of the original audience had expected to see the Sirens as mermaid -like nymphs , they were surprised to find them as bird-like creatures with women's heads. [ 1 ]
The painting is a composition of two figures with rocks and the sea. A young Sicilian fisherman slipping asleep down a rock into the tide is grasped round the neck by a water-nymph. He is swarthy in complexion, with dark curly hair, and nude save only for a crimson loin-cloth, his purple drapery being cast aside upon the grey rocks.
