Fred W. Symmes Chapel, also known locally as "Pretty Place", is an open-air chapel located in Cleveland, South Carolina. Built in 1941 by Fred Symmes, it is situated on Stone Mountain at an elevation of 3,200 feet [1] overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. [2] [3] It is visited by an estimated 312,000 people annually. [4]
The range begins at Standingstone Mountain, near Caesars Head State Park, and go northeasterly to Blakes Peak, near Saluda, North Carolina. Straddling the North and South Carolina state line, it is flanked by the Green and Saluda rivers.
The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVHT) is part of the U.S. National Trails System, and N.C. State Trail System. [1] It recognizes the Revolutionary War Overmountain Men, Patriots from what is now East Tennessee who crossed the Unaka Mountains and then fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina.
The North Carolina side of the mountain was owned by former Congressman Charles H. Taylor.In June 2010 he sold 8,000 acres (3,200 ha) to The Conservation Fund. [4] The Fund has donated 4.8 acres (1.9 ha), at the top of the mountain, to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and conveyed a remaining 6,730 acres (2,720 ha) to the North Carolina Forest Service for Headwaters State Forest.
